Separated by the Border - Book Recommendation

If you don’t want to know what’s going on at the border, if you want to be able to hide in your bubble and ignore the very real crisis that our country and actual people are dealing with on a daily basis then this book is not for you. If you would like to believe that God has nothing to say to you in relation to immigration, and feel that it’s not your concern, then again this book is not for you.

BUT, if you find yourself wondering, ‘who are God’s people and what does that mean for immigration.’ If you are wondering why children are being separated from their parents. If you are pro-life and not simply anti-abortion - if you are wondering if there is anything you can do to help - if you want to understand the border crisis from a structural and personal perspective, then this book is for you.

I simply cannot recommend this book enough and I would say that whether or not I was a friend of Gena’s. However, I respect the text even more because I do know her, know her heart, and know how much she wrestles with herself and what she put into this book.

I know the hours she slaved away writing it and the many more hours she spent praying about what to include. I know that she has spent time on her knees and bowed over her computer, praying for every single person who will interact with this story. And I pray that you choose to interact with it. I pray that you let it speak to you. I pray that you will open your hearts to the stories and people inside. I pray you let yourself feel the agony, and I pray you let it affect you.

As a bit of background, Gena and I met in graduate school as we were both studying International Development. At the time I was working with Iraqi refugees in Knoxville and Gena and her husband were serving as missionaries in Northern Mexico. I remember thinking so many times how wise she was, how God was going to use her in huge ways, simply because she was committed, prayerful, and willing to serve. Her actions over the past few years and the culmination of this book are evidence of a life lived faithfully. So order a copy and let yourself soak it all in.
