Make Money from Home by Teaching English Online with Dada
My Dada Experience
I have worked for Dada twice now and both times I have really enjoyed it. If you have looked into working with Dada before and are still interested, make sure to read this as they have restructured and changed their policies and payment somewhat, beginning in December 2019.
For the past 3 years, I have taught in person classes at a language center here in Marrakech, my language center is totally awesome, but honestly I much prefer Dada to the traditional classroom environment. Mostly it boils down to the minimal time I spend preparing outside of the ‘classroom’ and my ability to really tailor each class to the student since each class is one on one. I also have requested older students, which means that most of my students have a good level of English and are mostly there to have a conversation partner, which I enjoy.
I also really love the diversity of what I get to teach. In one day alone I got to teach phonics, read 3 different books with students, discuss the properties of matter (look Ma, I’m using my biology degree), and explore all the different movie genres. Oh, and sometimes I get serenaded by my more musically gifted students.
Requirements to be a Dada Teacher
~ Be a native English speaker, or have native like fluency
~ Have a BA degree
~ Teaching certification such as TEFL, TESL, Celta (not required to apply, but you must obtain it)
If you don’t have your TEFL, don’t worry, you can complete a course all online for sure cheap. Groupon regularly has deals for courses that run between $29-$35 USD depending on the type of course you’d like. I would suggest you do the 150 hour course which would qualify you to teach anywhere online and at most language centers world wide.
~Criminal Background check
Not needed to apply, you will just need to upload it once you have been offered a position. You can get a free one almost instantly from here.
~A desktop or laptop computer with audio/video capabilities
~ Decent internet
~ 1-2 years of teaching experience (preferred, but not required - this can be any type of teaching or instruction)
Hours
Hours are available nearly around the clock, but peak hours (which fill up the fastest and are most consistent) are Monday to Friday from 6-9:10 PM and Saturday & Sunday from 9 AM-12 PM, 2-4 PM, and 6-9:10 PM. Keep in mind, that these hours are all listed in Beijing time, so if you are living in Asia or Europe, the times are great, if you are in the US, you will definitely need some coffee on hand! The plus side is, you can be finished with your work day by 8 or 9 AM!
Why you should work for Dada
Flexible schedule
Although the hours are a little wonky, depending on where you live, you choose the days, hours, and amount you’d like to work and they fill you up! In my opinion, it’s an amazing option for students, parents, and retirees!
Great Pay
The Dada pay structure recently changed in December 2019, and this is the current information for all new employees! One thing to note with the new pay structure is that it really favors people who want to work more hours because the more hours you work, the higher your hourly wage is.
PAY BREAKDOWN
Salary is made up of a base pay and incentive bonuses - these come from your number of ‘regular students’ (which will quickly be assigned to you within a few day) and your attendance performance. It is important to note that you are only paid for the hours you are actually teaching, so if you don’t have a student, you are not getting paid (however if you are assigned a student and they don’t show up, you are paid half your base salary).
Salary is delivered in USD in any method of your choosing (bank account - in any country, PayPal, Transferwise, etc.) I personally use and recommend Charles Schwab bank, which always releases the money quickly, has 0 fees, and are honestly just a gem to interact with.
Base Pay
Base pay ranges from 13.5 USD - 16.5 USD and is determined based on your teaching experience and mock class interview evaluation.
Incentive Bonuses
Potential Payment with base + bonuses = 14.5 USD - 23 USD (an hour) Essentially, the more hours you work in the month the more your hourly wage will be.
This chart was made using my real numbers, just to give you an idea of how it all works.
Another factor that can boost your salary is the Student Stability factor, it is determined based on the previous month and will give you extra income. A stable student is a ‘regular student’ who attends more than 15 classes with you, and the more stable students you have the higher your stability factor is, and the higher your pay will be.
so at my pay rate and amount of stable students, I would multiply $1890 (base pay + Step bonus total) X 1.03 which is $1946.70 USD a month
Essentially, they are trying to get teachers to teach more (step bonus) and to teach better (student stability factor), and doing both means you earn more money hourly.
but wait, there’s more!
Other bonuses include:
1) Cancellation subsidy: 30% of base pay for each cancelled class because of student no show
2) Trial class conversion bonus: $7 per conversion
3) Successful teacher referral bonus : $100 (currently $130) for each successful hire (referral must be hired and then teach 30 hours, and then you will receive bonus)
Easy & Enjoyable
Don’t get me wrong, you’ll have a student every now and then that you just don’t jive with or enjoy, but at least for me they are pretty rare. Unlike other teaching jobs, there is also little to no prep-work involved, classes last either 14, 25, or 30 mins each (depending on the class type), and the follow up assessments should take you no more than 2-3 minutes a piece.
