Plus Size Winter Essentials
Spending time in nature is one of the most healing things we can do. Sadly for many, a major barrier to spending time outside is not being able to find appropriate, reasonably priced gear. The problem is even worse if you live in a plus size body. Everyone should have the ability to enjoy the great outdoors, and I am committed to helping people find great gear that works for them! Below are some of my favorite winter essentials for all my plus size ladies!
Boots
Rock Rooster Boots
Having warm, dry feet is absolutely essential in order to enjoy your time outside. These are honestly the BEST boots I have ever owned and they cost under $100. There was no break-in period at all and I have worn them every day since I received them (2 months ago) with no issues. They come in a standard wide width, which means I can easily wear thick socks and they accommodate my wide ankles and calves with ease. Please make note that they are listed on the website in men’s sizes, so you need to order a size and a half smaller. So if you are a women’s 7, you should order a 5.5 on the website. Whether I am working on the bus, playing in the snow, or going out to dinner, these are my go-to boots.

minnetonka Torrey house boots
Cold feet make for a miserable day. These cozy house boots are plush inside and durable outside. They even have a full, grippy tread on the bottom incase you need to wear them outside to grab the paper or let your pup out. These house boots will be your feet happy all winter long. Plus, they’re adorable and come in 3 different color options.
base layers
Cuddl Duds
If you don’t want to walk around feeling like Ralphie’s little brother from A Christmas Story. then you need to get some good base layers. I personally love Cuddl Duds. As a kid, I remember hating them because they were a silky material that I wore under my pants and made them slip off, which meant I had to walk around all the time hiking up my pants. But things have changed and Cuddl Duds is now my fav when it comes to base layers. Their softknit and fleecewear materials are thin, stretchy and so warm. Even on the coldest days in northern IL, when we are working outside all day, I only wear 1 layer of Cuddl Duds with a jacket over it and I am set. They are reasonably priced and offer up to a 3x.
Jackets
These are the two jackets I wear all winter long. They are well made, reasonably priced and if taken care of, they will adventure with you for years. Columbia’s proprietary Omni-heat technology radiates your own body heat back to you, which means don’t need a huge puffy jacket in order to stay warm. It is also tailored at the waist, which creates a nice silhouette. Their fleece jacket is a 3 season jacket which means it’s perfect for fall bonfires, winter snuggles, and spring strolls. I also love the leather touches and waffled-looking material. It really elevates this jacket.
Insulated Waterproof Pants
If you plan on going skiing, or rolling around outside, then you are going to need some ski pants, and I couldn’t recommend LLBean’s Wildcat Waterproof Insulated Snow Pant enough. They offer up to a 3x in 3 different colors and they stretch in all the right places.
Accessories
Gobi Heat makes a heated beanie that is out of this world amazing. It is a bit of an investment at $119, but I personally think it is worth it if you spend long periods of time outside. A single charge lasts 7.5 hours on the low setting, so it would be great for working outside, ball games, or even skiing. The best part is, it’s machine washable!
And if you are looking for a super warm hat, that doesn’t totally break the bank, then you should snag one of Carhartt’s Fleece Lined Beanies.
These socks are cozy for every day winter wear. They are thick, but not so thick that they don’t easily fit into boots. They are boot but socks, meaning they rise about 6 sinches from the heel. They are knit, not wool, so these are great for everyday wear, but they wouldn’t be the ones I would wear for a long hike.
I won’t be recommending any gloves, because, I don’t wear any special gloves, I just wear whatever I can find to fit my short fingers. But I do think everyone should have a set of usb rechargeable hand warmers. In my opinion the popular disposable handwarmers are a waste of money, and they are bad for the planet. But these Coopa Rechargeable Hand Warmers are AWESOME. They have 3 different temperature settings, charge quickly, and will last you for years! Throw one of these bad boys in each pocket and you are set for the day!
and there you have it!
